It's been rather a long time coming.

Es ist einige Zeit vergangen...

The plan was set in motion 2 1/2 years ago and it was fairly simple.

I was told that the German Church wished to establish a relationship with churches in the Central Southeast Ohio United Church of Christ.

I was given the name of Rev. Andreas Müller and he Facebooked me and I visited him in Germany and he visited Dublin, Ohio later that year and he and Rev. Kerstin brought ten German students to Ohio the next year and now it is our turn to cross the Atlantic and visit Germany. 

Nothing to it.

Vor 2 1/2 Jahren ist eine Idee aufgekommen. Der Ev. Kirchenkreis Unna wollte eine Partnerschaft zu Kirchen der United Church of Christ im südöstlichen Teil von Zentral-Ohio aufbauen. 

Andreas hat Bob also ganz klassisch auf Facebook angeschrieben und was soll man sagen, es folgten ein Besuch von Bob in Deutschland und Einer von Andreas und Daniel in Dublin, Ohio. Ein Jahr später sind wir dann zusammen mit Kerstin nach Amerika geflogen und jetzt steht der Gegenbesuch unserer amerikanischen Freunde vor der Tür. 

It wasn't quite as simple as that because there were parents and pastors and parishioners from Ohio and Germany all involved. There was the larger Ohio German Working Group of the UCC which handed over a lot of this and gave council and direction.

Naja, vielleicht war es auch nicht ganz so einfach. Immerhin sind Pfarrerinnen und Pfarrer, Eltern und Mitarbeitende beider Kirchen beteiligt. Es gab eine größere Arbeitsgruppe für diesen Austausch, die im Hintergrund eine Menge Arbeit erledigt hat. 

But for now, mid July 2017.....we are on the road, or in the air as it might be said.

Aber jetzt, Mitte Juli 2017 ... sind wir endlich auf dem Weg nach Deutschland. 

We weren't the only student group flying out of Columbus today but we barely noticed the other flyers as we passed through John Glenn International in Columbus and various terminals in Newark, New Jersey and finally to Düsseldorf in Germany.

Wir waren nicht die einzige Gruppe die sich heute vom John Glenn International Airport auf den Weg in die große weite Welt gemacht hat. Mitbekommen haben wir aber nicht besonders viel hiervon, egal ob in Columbus, an den unzähligen Terminals am Newark Airport in New Jersey oder schlussendlich in Düsseldorf.

                

Here is what Sharon and Amy and Pastor Lisa and I hope for these students: that they see the world as larger than the NW corner of Metro Columbus. We want them to see their German friends who stayed in our homes last July and in whose homes we will now stay for two weeks of this July. We want them to see that we have common roots in the Christian Reformation. That we have common roots in Western Civilization. We'd like them to learn of Martin Luther and where he lived and how he helped set about a reform movement. 

Sharon, Amy, Pfarrerin Lisa Bowersock und Bob wünschen sich, dass den amerikanischen Jugendlichen bewusst wird, dass die Erde noch viel viel größer ist, als die nord-östliche Ecke von Columbus. Dass alle endlich ihre Freunde aus dem letzten Jahr wiedersehen und feststellen können, dass wir gemeinsame Wurzeln in der westlichen Gesellschaft und der Reformation haben. Außerdem wünschen sie sich, dass sie entdecken und erleben können, wie Martin Luther gelebt und gearbeitet hat, um die Reformation ins Rollen zu bringen.

Our students need to see historic Germany and ultra modern Germany. Climb cathedral spiral stairs and ride their trains. How do Germans work with and welcome immigrants and how do they view the United States? Cologne, Wartburg, Berlin, Unna.

Sie sollen das historische und moderne Deutschland kennenlernen und dabei Wendeltreppen in Kirchen erklimmen und mit dem Zug fahren. Wie arbeiten die Deutschen mit Flüchtlingen? Wie heißen sie diese Willkommen? Wie stehen sie eigentlich zu den USA?  

Köln, Eisenach, Berlin und Unna werden es uns hoffentlich zeigen können.

                                

Six of our students will be in the University this Fall, four will be Juniors or Seniors in High School...what will this trip mean for them? I'd like the think it will be as enlightening as their future college semester-abroad program which they will undoubtably take in the coming years.

Sechs der amerikanischen Jugendlichen werden im kommenden Herbst studieren. Vier weitere ihr Junior oder Senior Jahr an der Highschool antreten. Was bedeutet dieser Austausch für sie?

Bob hofft, dass es mindestens so eindrucksvoll wird wie das Austausch Programm an der Uni, an dem sie ohne Zweifel irgendwann teilnehmen werden. 

                       

After arriving from Düsseldorf we were met my our old and new German friends in Unna.

Endlich war es Zeit unsere alten und neuen Freunde wiederzusehen.

We ate and walked Unna to the large church for a bit of reflection about churches and the place of such huge structures in the community.

Frühstück gab es im Kreiskirchenamt in Unna. Natürlich mit anschließendem Stadtrundgang.

                                   

Last year I climbed to the top of the church building via this door....

And the result was this view for everyone.

Der Stadtrundgang führte uns schlussendlich auf den Turm der Stadtkirche in Unna. Trotz des wolkenverhangenen Himmels war die Aussicht ziemlich beeindruckend.

                                            

We are all grateful to Sharon Pace for leadership and accompanying us on this trip...and to Amy Ladu who spent two years planning with us...and to Pastor Lisa Bowesock who gave us guidance all along.
